Job Description The incumbent should possess a broad background in accounting and cost analysis, preferably from a manufacturing environment, as may be demonstrated by one with a college degree in accounting and with three to five years of previous qualifying experience in lesser jobs involving accounting practices, inventory control, and cost analysis. The incumbent should also possess an above-average knowledge of Windows and the Microsoft Suite of software packages including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access. Knowledge of the General Ledger, Payables, and Inventory Control software components of Lawson software is desirable but not required. The Mill Accountant is responsible for the accounting function in the Beaumont Steel Mill Division to include inventories and inventory control, audit of accounts payable and production records. The position is also responsible for the effective and accurate collection, compilation, and issuance of performance reports for plant operations involving production data such as production rates, man hours per ton, and dollars per ton. Show trends and analyze for cost control applications. Assist Plant Controller in month-end financial closings and in preparation of the division's annual business plan and capital/operating expense budgets. There are several challenges for the position, including maintaining accurate records (production, purchasing, material); providing cost benefit analyses for operating management decisions; and analyzing cost records to recommend changes to improve profitability. SAFETY: Provide full support for the implementation and management of the Safety In Action system in are of responsibility. Participate in all accident and incident investigations in area of responsibility. Conduct routine safety activities including inspection tours, employee contacts and visibility tours. Ensure that safety rules and requirements are being followed in all work areas. Ensure that work rules are posted in all work areas. Maintain compliance with visual management standards. Duties & Responsibilities Maintain accurate and timely records of both cost and operational data including preparation of data for submission to the division and corporation on a timely basis. Assist in the month-end financial closing of the Beaumont Steel Mill and perform the closing process in absence of Plant Controller. Assist in preparing the division's annual business plan and budgets and provide monthly reporting of actual to plan expenditures to division management. Work with division management team (General Manager, Superintendents, etc.) in cost analyses, what-if analyses, etc., to analyze and reduce production costs. Review selected accounts payable for proper approvals and account codes. Maintain fixed asset records coordinating with Corporate Tax Department. Assure accurate reporting and classification of capital projects and prepare comparisons to capital budget. Direct clerical personnel in the processing and payment of invoices. Responsible for resolving employee grievances. Responsible for supervising personnel effectively to minimize turnover. Responsible for safety of employees and for effectively administering safety programs. Responsible for employee selection, training, evaluation, and discipline. Responsible for actively supporting and participating in division's teambuilding efforts. Communicate effectively and work in close coordination with all mill personnel including mill department heads, and Corporate Accounting personnel. Responsible for carrying out corporate, plant, and departmental policies and programs. Maintain inventory records for melt shop and rolling mill variable costs, assure accurate reporting of production, consumption, and shipments. Reconcile inventory records with the general ledger. Monitor and/or coordinate cycle checks, physical inventories of finished goods. The Individual The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance, which is required. At least 2 years as a staff accountant. Inventory experience is required; experience in manufacturing is preferred. General Ledger and Cost Analysis experience needed, Sarbanes Oxley Compliance experience preferred. The incumbent must perform the above-mentioned duties and responsibilities in accordance with all Federal, State, and Local Environmental Regulations. The incumbent must report to his/her immediate supervisor any situation which may have a detrimental impact to human health or the environment.
